Why he matters

Pérez is Cadillac’s second experience hire — and the most decorated Mexican driver in F1 history. He spent four seasons at Red Bull as Verstappen’s teammate (2021–2024), winning six races and finishing second in the 2023 championship before being dropped after a difficult 2024. His Mexican fan base is one of the largest in the sport.

How he drives

Pérez is the king of one-stop strategies — his ability to make a single set of hard tyres last 50+ laps is genuinely unmatched on the modern grid. The flip side is qualifying: he was reliably half a second slower than Verstappen on Saturdays, which is what eventually cost him the seat.

Watch for

  • His tyre management on long stints — Pérez can make an early-pit strategy work when the math says it won’t.
  • His home Grand Prix in Mexico City — the loudest single fanbase moment of any race weekend.
  • His starts — sometimes spectacular, sometimes catastrophic. There’s no middle ground.
